White House Steamrolls Over Attempts to Launch NSA Spying Probe

Also from WaPo:

Congress appeared ready to launch an investigation into the Bush administration's warrantless domestic surveillance program last week, but an all-out White House lobbying campaign has dramatically slowed the effort and may kill it, key Republican and Democratic sources said yesterday.

The Senate intelligence committee is scheduled to vote tomorrow on a Democratic-sponsored motion to start an inquiry into the recently revealed program in which the National Security Agency eavesdrops on an undisclosed number of phone calls and e-mails involving U.S. residents without obtaining warrants from a secret court. Two committee Democrats said the panel -- made up of eight Republicans and seven Democrats -- was clearly leaning in favor of the motion last week but now is closely divided and possibly inclined against it.

Terror "Watch" List in the US Stands at 325,000

A number which suspiciously has included, at times, Gore Vidal, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Ozzie and Harriet's son David, and others. Gee... are only non-Republicans on the Watch List?

Today in Bush Reality (Surreal to Most of the World)

... Cheney is expected to speak publicly about his shooting of a man in Texas.

Right. Through whom? Sean Hannity? Bill O'Reilly? Someone else who will phrase it, as Bob Schieffer on CBS did last night, that poor Mr. Cheney was the victim of an accident?

... The GOP is getting mighty concerned about Cheney as a liability. From WaPo:

Marlin Fitzwater, a former Republican White House spokesman, told Editor & Publisher magazine that Cheney "ignored his responsibility to the American people."
Yeah, they're just trying to protect the (cough) boy king, Bush, not to mention the 2006 mid-term elections.

... John Perkins, author of "Confessions of an Economic Hitman", says that he has proof that had Saddam agreed to give the Bushie-friendly oil companies really cheap oil priced in dollars and NOT Euros, he would still be president of the occupied Iraq. Perkins also says we're sending economic hitmen in to threaten Evo Morales in Bolivia.

Sadly, I really don't doubt this at all.

Liberal Media? Fair and Balanced? Yeah, Sure, Right

From Media Matters:

... as this study reveals, conservative voices significantly outnumber progressive voices on the Sunday talk shows. Media Matters for America conducted a content analysis of ABC's This Week, CBS' Face the Nation, and NBC's Meet the Press, classifying each one of the nearly 7,000 guest appearances during President Bill Clinton's second term, President George W. Bush's first term, and the year 2005 as either Democrat, Republican, conservative, progressive, or neutral. The conclusion is clear: Republicans and conservatives have been offered more opportunities to appear on the Sunday shows - in some cases, dramatically so.

Among the study's key findings:

The balance between Democrats/progressives and Republicans/conservatives was roughly equal during Clinton's second term, with a slight edge toward Republicans/conservatives: 52 percent of the ideologically identifiable guests were from the right, and 48 percent were from the left. But in Bush's first term, Republicans/ conservatives held a dramatic advantage, outnumbering Democrats/progressives by 58 percent to 42 percent. In 2005, the figures were an identical 58 percent to 42 percent.

Counting only elected officials and administration representatives, Democrats had a small advantage during Clinton's second term: 53 percent to 45 percent. In Bush's first term, however, the Republican advantage was 61 percent to 39 percent -- nearly three times as large.

In both the Clinton and Bush administrations, conservative journalists were far more likely to appear on the Sunday shows than were progressive journalists. In Clinton's second term, 61 percent of the ideologically identifiable journalists were conservative; in Bush's first term, that figure rose to 69 percent.

In 1997 and 1998, the shows conducted more solo interviews with Democrats/progressives than with Republicans/conservatives. But in every year since, there have been more solo interviews with Republicans/conservatives.

The most frequent Sunday show guest during this nine-year period is Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who has appeared 124 times. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) has been the most frequent guest since 2003.

In every year examined by the study -- 1997 - 2005 -- more panels tilted right (a greater number of Republicans/conservatives than Democrats/progressives) than tilted left. In some years, there were two, three, or even four times as many righttitled panels as left-tilted panels.

Congressional opponents of the Iraq war were largely absent from the Sunday shows, particularly during the period just before the war began.

In short, the Sunday talk shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC are dominated by conservative voices, from newsmakers to commentators. The data from the Clinton years indicate that the disparity cannot be explained simply by the fact that Republicans currently control the government.

Congress Continues to Shirk Its Duties While Forever Voting Itself Raises

Lifted from O'Franken Factor:

Rep. Henry Waxman's Comm on Government Reform:
One of Congress' main constitutional responsibilities is to conduct oversight to check abuses of power by other branches of government. During the last four years, however, Congress has failed to conduct meaningful investigations of allegations of serious misconduct involving the Bush Administration. As described below, Congress has failed to investigate:

    • The role of the White House in promoting misleading intelligence about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and ties to al-Qaeda;
    • The responsibility of senior Administration officials for the abuses at Abu Ghraib;
    • The role of the Vice President's office in the award of Halliburton contracts;
    • The role of the White House in withholding the Medicare cost estimates from Congress;
    • The identity of the energy industry campaign contributors that met with the Vice President's energy task force;
    • The role of White House officials in leaking the identity of a covert CIA agent;
    • The influence of industry lobbyists in writing EPA regulations;
    • Allegations of conflicts of interest at multiple federal agencies and the White House; and
The role of Attorney General Ashcroft in illegal campaign finance activities.

Very Expensive Lipstick on Those Pigs!

Posted by Pudentilla at Skippy International (which sports a revised look):

it may be lipstick on a pig,
bush admin. spent over $1.6 billion on advertising and p.r. since 2003, gao finds - today rep. henry a. waxman, democratic leader nancy pelosi, rep. george miller, rep. elijah e. cummings, and other senior democrats released a new government accountability office report finding that the bush administration spent more than $1.6 billion in public relations and media contracts in a two and a half year span.
And THAT'S in addition to the billions in "royalty free" oil drilling we're giving energy companies this year that already received BILLIONS more in "incentive" tax breaks. You know, for companies that PAY no taxes.

Remember Enron paid no taxes for years while it got big tax breaks.

Praise to Jesus! And His General!

PatriotBoy is writing letters again!

Dear Pastor Mowery,I just recently learned about the good work you're doing with kids there at Combat for Christ. We need more programs like it. It's certainly the only program I'm aware of where a young "Christian Soldier" can receive the weapons training needed to "engage and eliminate [Jesus'] greatest enemies."

That said, I have a couple of concerns. First, you seem to be missing something in your firearms training. Although your web site features photos of kids firing pistols and shotguns, I couldn't find a single picture of one of these junior Christian soldiers executing the Cheney "swing around and shoot the guy behind you" maneuver. That raises a big red flag for me. I can't trust a man who doesn't show proper respect for the Deputy Leader's innovative shooting style.
Funny, my savior doesn't carry a gun. Why's that?

Do I Hear One Million?

According to The Times of London, the English language will soon anoint its one millionth word. Gee, that only took some centuries.

Please, dear Lord, don't let the millionth word be:

1) Truthiness
2) Nipplegate
3) Nukular
4) Any other Bushism

Now excuse me while I go find a downloadable version of "Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life".

Why the Sudden Interest in Farris Hassan?

I notice the searches are going wild for him.

For those who have forgotten, he's the creepy Florida repugnantcan teen who cashed in his stocks (I don't think kids under 18 are supposed to own any) to go to Baghdad expecting America to protect him so he could become the media darling of the far right nut wing. Anyone who gives him anything more than a smack is a fool.

Duck! It's Dick!

Uh... so the fellow we were told just had a tiny bit of birdshot (the kind of thing where you go to the emergency room, they dig the stuff out, and send you home) and would go right home has now been moved BACK (did we hear he was there in the first place? Uh no...) to ICU because he had a heart attack with shot lodged IN his heart. Now he's expected to be in the ICU for at least another week.

Now, granted, Dick Cheney could never be hurt that way. He has no heart.

But I also noticed that White House medical staff is being widely consulted on the case, which means we're ALL picking up the tab for Dick's dickyness.

Man said he had "much bigger priorities" during Vietnam but loves those guns now.

There is, however, a much bigger issue here. If Cheney lies and counterfeits a shooting incident, what the hell else will he do?

The more this Administration plays out, the less I feel I know about 9/11 and the "official" version we have been given. I'm not even sure how much anyone in Afghanistan - Osama bin Laden Forgotten included - had to do with it. We already know they lied us into Iraq - and continue to lie their way through that "cakewalk" - and are using the exact SAME lies to bring us to Iran. And Iran will open up a whole new can of whoopass that may make these Muslims-Against-Danish-Mohammed-Cartoons riots seem like a game of ring-around-the-Bush-rosy.

Vermont Daily Briefing

I happened on Vermont Daily Briefing today and it's good. Non-Vermonters will enjoy the artwork (gotta love the Rove and Cheney caricatures), but stick around to read the commentary. A lot of non-Green Mountain cash and political clout is being used to turn Vermont's one US Senate opening (with the departure of GOP-turned-Indy) and its ONLY US House of Representatives seat (now held by Indy/Socialist Bernie Sanders who is going after Jeffords' seat) into a showcase for more of the right-wing nutcases we see elsewhere. Not good. Not good at all.

Also say hello to The Peace Garden.

Smoldering Embers...

You know, I was convinced today was going to go better. But after the chimney fire a little while ago - and my outrage that the Bushies stage scripted another day (apparently successfully), I think I'll just go up to my smoky bed for the first time before midnight since... well... I suspect I was 9.

Toodles.

Oh yes, and congratulations to fellow Vermont blogger, Cathy Resmer, and her significant other on the birth of their new baby boy.

Irony, Another Word Bush Does Not Know

Does anyone find it YET another irony that men like Cheney - and Bush, and Scalia, and Tom DeLay, and Clarence (hardly Darrow) Thomas, et al - did everything in their power to avoid wars they're happy to start themselves (yet not fight in) while they also then can't WAIT to pick up a gun against pheasants and, oh yes, doves?

Yes, the creepy VP loves to shoot doves.

Why am I not surprised?

Only thing a good Bush Republican won't do apparently is pick up a gun to fight in a war he starts. That's always someone else's - like a poor person's (and hopefully for the most rabid GOPers, some "shiftless wetback" or "colored") - cross to bear.

Montpelier and Peace

For those who failed to notice, more than 300 Vermonters braved very cold weather on Saturday to call for an end to the War ON Iraq. I have no doubt many of them included people, like me, whose previous marching and letter writing resulted on us appearing on government watch lists.

Nothing scarier than people who don't believe guns are the answer to everything, of course, and MUCH better to have a draft-dodging gun nut like Cheney in charge.

Impeachment Buzz, Wiretaps, and More

From John Conyers' blog:

First, I see in today's New York Times that Senators Kennedy and Feingold have also made inquiry of telecommunications firms concerning their involvement in the NSA wiretap scandal. I released a letter to numerous firms on the date of our Democratic hearing last month, but am glad to see that others are weighing in to help us get to the truth.

Second, I see the impeachment buzz is not abating. The New York Times writes on the issue (in the context of noting that the DOJ inquiry in the the so-called leak of the story is growing).

John Nichols of the Nation writes on the subject as well, with an extensive discussion of my resolution to investigate Bush Administration wrongdoing and make recommendations regarding impeachment.
Even the nitwit Heather Wilson (GOP, Planet Mud) - remember her? - is also starting to shout for a look into the NSA wiretap debacle.

On Impeachment? Please do!

White House Held News of Cheney's Half-Assed Shooting Incident for More Than 24 Hours...

And now we learn that all control for how things were handled to the public came not from Pennsylvania Avenue but from Cheney on his long, long weekend of shooting. Barf.

Fellow Vermont Blogs I Have Not Noted Before

Say hello to Vermonters First where you can find good stuff on Lake Champlain (the other great lake), Vermont National Guard honcho Martha Rainville's bid for Jeffords' seat, and the endorsement by Dean's Democracy for America of Bernie Sanders for US Senate and State Senate pro tem leader Pete Welch for Bernie's vacating seat).

(Me? I'm still shuddering at the Rich Tarrant - I'm from Florida... wait, NO! I'm from Vermont! Hey, I can buy my way out of tax trouble, too - candidacy for Bernie's current spot. He's already got $2M to "buy" this cheap seat and I do not like him one bit. Vermont only gets ONE US Congressman; let it NOT be Tarrant! I would also LOVE to see Jim Douglas sent back under his rock but 67% of Dems voted for this pompous Bushie ass last time out.)

Also say hello to Vermonters Against the Death Penalty. Vermont does not have the death penalty but the feds forced a death penalty case through up here with - of course - the predictable result of sentencing death. Anyone who has watched fed cases in the era of Ashcroft and Gonzales probably knows exactly how that works. The point with cases in New England was to "reduce the northeast's shyness about executing people. I'd rather just eliminate men like Ashcroft and Gonzales, and not in the death chamber either (TYVM).

Eventually - meaning when I find time and less chaos in my life - I'll get these progressive blogs onto the blogroll.

What is it With the Bushes and Cheneys?

Laura Bush, as a teenager, joy rides over another teenager - there was some question whether Laura and her friend in the car were drunk at the time and I've heard the victim they ran over died. Laura of course was NOT charged, the delicate little flower. Makes you realize how close to the tree Dubya and Laura's twins fell.

NOW VP Dick Cheney shot a friend and fellow hunter not once but SEVERAL times in one of his privileged, energy/oil company funded hunting trips of his. The victim, expected to survive, was a major donor to Bush/Cheney in 2000 and 2004.

The former I feel sorry for; the latter perhaps got what he deserved.

Of course, Mr. Cheney will face no charges either.

It's so nice to be privileged.

Feds Start Massive Data Mining Effort on Us All

Lovely story out of the Christian Science Monitor (Jill Carroll, our hopes are with you).

Funny, the Bushies get ALL the intelligence wrong but they have to know when our last bowel movement was.

Answering Email Including About the Appeal

Since my email is still a bit... uh.. non-functional, let me respond to a few emails here.

First, no, that was no joke in comments about John Bolton being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. There is always a loon somewhere willing to nominate a Bushie.

Second, yes, I am aware that former VP candidate John Edwards is in Vermont for an anti-poverty conference. I'm just too poor to attend. ;)

Third, Olympics? Sorry, I don't watch sports. :>

I also did not catch Tanya Hardin's miracle Hollywood makeover, Sheryl Crowe's breakup with the "energy enhanced" Lance Armstrong (Texas boys feel obligated and privileged to cheat), or the actual cartoon that spawned the Mohammed protests. I did catch O'Reilly once this week, however, and I'm still wretching because of it.

Fourth, no, my emergency situation that resulted in my appeal is not resolved. I was able to cobble together a temporary line but it's running over snow and negative temps so I do not expect it to last more than a day. I could be back offline by Monday but.. who knows...

Four people were very generous of their time, their hopes, and their finances, and it is appreciated. Hopefully, all four have received notes.

If you have money - and please do not try to give if your straits are as dire as mine - and want to donate, there is Paypal.com (address: katejchase@cut-to-the-chase.net) and my Amazon honor box on the lower right sidebar. Doing so will help keep another independent voice speaking. Thank you.

Bush Pushes Social Security Reform On the Sly - You'll Pay $700 Billion (For Starters)

What a sneaky bastard Bush is.

No one wanted it - and told him so loudly - so he slips it into the budget anyway at the same time he proposes billions in cuts for Medicare. Lovely man. You must be so proud if you voted for him. ::choke::

Thanks to MissM for the link.

Kenneth Starr, Again Shown a Liar and a Fraud

This was the man Bush I wanted to put on the Supreme Court after he pushed through the disastrous Clarence Thomas. And because Ken Starr didn't get his appointment, because Clinton said he would NOT nominate Starr, we ended up with an investigation that some peg at costing more than $200 million before it was finished that ONLY proved there was dried semen on the blue dress of a consenting adult woman.

I bring you, Ken Starr, liar and fraud.

From CNN:

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Lawyers for a death row inmate, including former Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr, sent fake letters from jurors asking California's governor to spare the man's life, prosecutors said Friday.

The jurors denied they thought Michael Morales deserved clemency because some of the testimony at his trial may have been fabricated, said Nathan Barankin, spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

Kenneth Starr is best known as the special prosecutor in the Monica Lewinsky affair during President Bill Clinton's administration.
Pious, sanctimonious, stinking piece of GOP elephant dung.

One You Won't Believe

Something else from The Carpetbagger Report you probably won't believe even after you read:

Before the president delivered remarks on the war on terror in the National Guard Building in DC, Bush received a nice bronze gift.
Presidents are often memorialized in their most famous moments — George Washington crossing the Delaware, Theodore Roosevelt at San Juan Hill.
Now President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard has been immortalized in bronze. The National Guard Association of the United States yesterday unveiled a bust of a young Lt. George W. Bush.
Now, if only Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard deserved to be immortalized in bronze, the bust might have been more appropriate.
A review of the regulations governing Bush's Guard service during the Vietnam War shows that the White House used an inappropriate — and less stringent — Air Force standard in determining that he had fulfilled his duty.

Because Bush signed a six-year "military service obligation," he was required to attend at least 44 inactive-duty training drills each fiscal year beginning July 1. But Bush's own records show that he fell short of that requirement, attending only 36 drills in the 1972-73 period, and only 12 in the 1973-74 period. The White House has said that Bush's service should be calculated using 12-month periods beginning on his induction date in May 1968. Using this time frame, however, Bush still fails the Air Force obligation standard.

Moreover, White House officials say, Bush should be judged on whether he attended enough drills to count toward retirement. They say he accumulated sufficient points under this grading system. Yet, even using their method, which some military experts say is incorrect, U.S. News 's analysis shows that Bush once again fell short. His military records reveal that he failed to attend enough active-duty training and weekend drills to gain the 50 points necessary to count his final year toward retirement.

The U.S. News analysis also showed that during the final two years of his obligation, Bush did not comply with Air Force regulations that impose a time limit on making up missed drills. What's more, he apparently never made up five months of drills he missed in 1972, contrary to assertions by the administration.
According the WaPo account of yesterday's event, after receiving the bust, the president "seemed no more eager to talk about [his Guard service] yesterday than he did in his 2004 reelection campaign" and "offered virtually no comment on the bust at all." Sore subject?

A Bushie Week in Review

One more before I go struggle with email (again); this from the good folks at The Carpet Bagger:

* In an unprecedented action, the Environmental Protection Agency's own scientific panel challenged the agency's proposed public health standards governing soot and dust. Scientists found that Bush appointees "twisted" or "misrepresented" their recommendations in an "egregious" fashion, and inserted language into EPA reports from trade associations' lobbyists.

* The White House really did expose the identity of an undercover CIA agent.

* The White House unveiled one of the most irresponsible federal budgets anyone has ever seen and intentionally left out most funding for the war.

* State Department officials appointed by Bush have sidelined key career weapons experts and replaced them with less experienced political operatives who share the White House and Pentagon's distrust of international negotiations and treaties.

* The warrantless-search program Bush uses to capture bad guys isn't actually capturing bad guys.

* The former CIA official who coordinated U.S. intelligence on the Middle East accused the administration of "cherry-picking" intelligence and misusing intelligence "to justify decisions already made."

* The administration knew far more, far earlier about Katrina than they've been willing to admit.

* Jack Abramoff had far more, far closer connections to the president than the White House has been willing to admit.

* Scooter Libby told a grand jury that he was authorized by his "superiors," including the Vice President, to disclose classified information to reporters about Iraq's weapons capability in June and July 2003.

* The president boasted about thwarting a terrorist attack in Los Angeles, but a series of experts and administration officials suggest that Bush seriously exaggerated this threat.

Remember, for some administrations, this might be several months' worth of controversies. And yet, it's just another typical week in Bush's America.

Iraq, Iran, Israel, Oil, The Iranian Oil Bourse and Oh Vey!

Posted at Vermont Commons:

GGreat article providing a neat overview of imperialism and the dollar. With more and more rumblings of a new war with Iran, the need to escape the Empire may soon become much more pressing.

March arrives this year as the date for the establishment of the Iranian Oil Bourse, and coincidentally enough, the month by which Israel plans to attack Iran's alleged nuclear weapons facilities. (Note the statement provided by Netanyahu, "...that if Sharon did not act against Iran, 'then when I form the new Israeli government, we’ll do what we did in the past against Saddam’s reactor, which gave us 20 years of tranquillity.'” One certainly wonders what Sharon's recent stroke implicates.)

Anyway. I think I'll take my annual Spring vacation in February this year.

Waldo...

A free wish on what looks to be a nice little meteor shower going on right now to the first person who can answer this little question.

Google can help you answer the first part of it, but you're probably going to need to go Boolean to adequately answer the second.

What does "waldo" mean and who was the first sci-fi author to coin it?

At least eight of you I'm going to be sorely disappointed in if you do not answer correctly.

Now I'm going to go back and fight with my mailbox which won't send, receive, or [bleeping] shutdown for that matter.

Test

1-2-3- and if you're the governor of Cal-eee-foh-knee-ah (yes, you, Arnold) - 7.

The Iranian Oil Bourse

You NEED to know how this can affect us.

At first blush, you might dismiss the Iranian Bourse, the Iranian oil exchange which is set to open next month. But there are a horde of reasons why you should endeavor to learn more.

Not necessarily exclusive yet certainly not helped by our saber rattling at Iran to complete a stretch of land we started with occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Iranian Oil Bourse will NOT deal with U.S. dollars. Important? You bet.

Some predict this will send the American dollar into a great freefall than it already is. For all the Bush years, the American dollar has had less and less value.

Some links to the Iranian Oil Bourse discussion can be found here, and here, and here, and here, and here. Please add your own links as you find them. You also may want to look at PeakOil.

This warrants our full attention and now.

The Bushies' Latest Lie: We Thwarted a Second 9/11

That's what the Bushies suddenly pulled out of their rumps today. It was effective enough to bump the other news - like that Bush told Tony Blair we were going to squash Iraq regardless of diplomatic efforts in the leadup to Bush Gulf War II and that Scooter Libby (sans crutches) said top White House brass signed off on the leak of Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA operative to the press as a means of attack against former Amb. Joseph (Joe) Wilson - off the radar.

Well, folks, isn't it WAY past time we tell the Bushies to put up or shut up?

Dear Mr. Bush:

PROVE WHAT YOU SAY.

Don't hide behind the NSA and Islamic names and Dick Cheney's bravado.

Show us some proof or shut the you-know-what-up.

You're making this stuff up. You're desperate to scare people. You're a bully AND a coward and it's time a few fools realized this, including you and Cheney.

Signed,
Your Less Than Loving Public, the People You Screw More Aggressively Than Anything Bill Clinton Ever Did With Monica Lewinsky

The Mohammed Cartoons

Can you believe this?

Well, even if you can, I found it the height of hubris for Condi Rice to stand there with her Israeli counterpart to demand the violence stop while Bush - the greatest perpetrator of global violence perhaps ever - said to cut it out as well.

But, when all it said and done, it IS a cartoon. The Bushies would love to stop negative attacks against them. I don't think newspaper cartoons should be censored.

Why did Muslims never appear in the streets in such numbers to protest the Bush actions? I think they have much greater cause for concern there.

Thank You!

I am trying - seemingly futilely - to post Web based email to those of you kind enough to offer a bit of assistance at this time of high expenses that has forced me offline at least temporarily. I'm closer to getting back, and want to thank those of you who have helped. If you haven't gotten a personal mail from me, you should receive one today, Web gods willing.

Offline Appeal

Hi folks:

I come to you hat in hand, and embarrassed.

I've got a handful of issues that can all be resolved when someone pays me, but it looks like that may be weeks more. Namely, I've got a dead phone line with an ice-severed cable leading up to it, two dead computers and a third about to die, which means no computer, no access (except for 20 mile trips to the public library).

So, if you've ever been tempted to drop a few dollars to help sustain a blog, now would be an opportune time. As soon as I get the funds, one way or another, I will return. In the meantime, it will be hit or miss as I can get here.

If you want to donate to the blog fund, my paypal address is katejchase@cut-to-the-chase.net. I would not suggest sending me email, however, because it is too difficult to access everything via public computer.

And About More Worrisome Things than Oprah: Lies and the People Who Live Them

I had to cut the other post in half because this part is more useful than any post just marked "About Oprah". Eh. What a thought for going into Monday: Oprah.

Anyway....

About that famous shrink-writer (as opposed to shrinkwrapper, I think):

But I blame Oprah even more for the pap she passes out on a daily basis. The last time I sat through more than counting the black women in an Oprah audience, to my great surprise, she had as her guest a man I once worked for.

You'd recognize his name. He wrote some of the bestselling personal psychology books in the 1980s who liked to say there were people who lived lies so intrinsically, they made themselves evil in performance of the lie.

Unfortunately, I had the misfortune to discover that this great man lived one hell of an evil lie himself. I won't go into the details here. He passed just recently - surprisingly, not from his chainsmoking of unfiltered Camels, something you might not completely expect from a Waspish psychiatrist - and he was once much loved by a man I much loved. Not in a homosexual way (not that there is anything wrong with that as I put my ten cent Seinfeld line royalty in the mail) but the man I loved cherished this man as a friend, a mentor, and perhaps a father figure. Anyway, the point here is that some of his family members, of which I am not at all sure they ever learned about his lie because they had learned to lie to themselves, might happen upon this and I would not like them hurt at this time.

But I watched Oprah that day just completely fawn over this man. She said she spent close and personal time "breathing" his two or three bestsellers (I was around after the second one for a brief time when he helped start a foundation) and with this shrink and she was there to attest that this man was a God! Everyone should read his book, she said. It was THAT important, she said.

I thought about that for a long time. Even as I looked at his pale eyes staring back out of the TV at me, a man I'd sat across from several times as he probed me mentally for the work I was to do in his name and the same pale eyes I had to look into when I learned his life, I could see the pall over him so clearly. I could not begin to imagine why, even if Oprah was blinded by brain lust, people in the audience weren't squirming.

But they could not squirm, of course, because Oprah loved him and so they, too, of course, loved him.

As I said, this man died recently. It made me think a lot about that time. But also about some of my own choices and how close I'm come a few times in getting invested in my own lie. I'd like to think I've largely escaped that now, which is about the only reason I could begin work on "Dear God, What the Fuck?".

But who knows?

Who ever bloody knows until the very last breathes of life whether they escaped the lie or lived a lie exclusively?

Oprah lives a lie exclusively. She's enormously well paid for it.

This famous shrink lived a lie exclusively and yet was world renowned as a great sage of the human condition and how to avoid your own "condition".

James Frey is living the high lie life.

True, they say that the truth shall set you free. What they don't always admit is that the truth also will tie you in binds the likes of which you will never know until you try.

You see, when it comes right down to it, people like a James Frey or an Oprah or an ... oops, I almost said his name... (and actually, I've peppered more than enough clues with my wording for my immediate taste).. far better than they ever savor the truth. Hell, we spend our lives begging people to lie to us as effectively as we do to ourselves. Let someone come along and vibrate the illusion and WHAM! The poor truthsayer is gonna go toothless, penniless, and jobless.

People of the Lie? It's not uniquely American. But it's damned close.

About Oprah

OK, I got myself started about Oprah.

When I was quite young, I really hated soap operas. There was always enough bad drama in life so I couldn't imagine why anyone would watch a daytime soap opera (or hell, today's reality TV). My mother watched everything from "The Edge of Night" to the debut of "The Young and the Restless" and, as I also like to point out, my mother died watching a soap opera, which may tell you something about the genre.

But if you want purile daytime TV - OK, I mean other than Katie Couric and CNN and Judge Judy - watch Oprah.

My God, she's actually convinced herself that she's important and that she means something.

The only time I ever catch Oprah usually is when I'm very bored AND I can't find the TV remote before she utters a syllable. When that occurs, I stay just long enough to count the black women in her audience. Actually, there are usually more white men in her audience than black women. FAR more white men. Often, of an age to remember segregation.

And what do you think that says?

But I digress - as is my wont.

Oprah's total hypocrisy was really on display with this James Frey - "A Million Little Pieces" - and a couple thousan lies" controversy. Even when she was bitch-slapped with proof he'd deliberately sold fiction (which 19 publishers rejected) as non-fiction, Oprah "I am sooooo special! I just love myself" Winfrey insists his is a compelling story of redemption.

Redemption? As in the redemption of royalties from sales on his books that you got sold to white women who have only heard of heroin from their kids type?

The Smoking Gun did an excellent bit of research. And only when Frey came after them and they spilled more of it was it very clear that Frey lied his way through all of it.

I honestly do not hold the publisher responsible. In a book like that, a publisher is not going to 'vet it like you would lots of other things. Cookbooks don't get tested. And if credibility was a sign of what gets published, Ann Coulter would be printing only on the back of racist fortune cookies.

But I do blame Oprah because even after this came out, she insisted on calling Larry King's show and having Frey on air to promote him. Her apology this week was just to try to shirk the dead fish stink off herself and my did she dress for it.

(continued)

"Dear God, What the Fuck?"

Speaking of books...

Let's just say I've been working on a book about a woman's end-life discussions with God. And no, it's actually funny in places.

Think I can sell it with a title like "Dear God, What the Fuck?" or will I have to (BLEEP) it to make a publisher think Wal-Mart will order it?

Now, if a publisher happened by, I'll point you to some bestsellers right now that cover something of the same space but far less honestly, far less raw, far less amusingly. If you'll print James Frey's book, "A Million Little Pieces" - waving to the crew at Simon & Schuster I once wrote for when Viacom bought everything - you'll print fucking (or bleeping, if you're a Midwest publisher, of course) anything.

The first three chapters are available and I come house-trained, deadline-worthy, and with my own literary agent whenever I can find him. And no, it's not a technical book. ;P I've also authored 35 other published books but why exactly I did that eludes me. It's the masochist in me, I'm fairly certain.

If, however, you're another agent and you see some potential here, well... I accept my royalties with a 15% cut without screaming so long as the check is good and you have FedEx. The only thing I don't do is renege on contracts or go on Oprah (don't get me started on Oprah, the great white Hope for corn-fed white women throughout the land).

Democracy for America thingy This Weekend

Like apparently too many others, I tried to sign up for the Democracy for America (formerly, Dean for America) two-day leadership conference this (now past) weekend in Montpelier, but apparently got in too late after an overwhelming response. I've heard from several others who also did not hear back.

S'ok though - I literally did not quite have the gas money to commute both days and this was not the weekend I would have chosen to spend in the company of other humans anyway.

Let's just say I've been working on a book about a woman's end-life discussions with God. And no, it's actually funny in places. Really.

The NSA - and Mr. Bush - Needs to Read the U.S. Constitution

Did all of you catch the huge gaffe - and not just a gaffe, really since it indicates the level to which they'll go to try to suppress the actual wording of the U.S. Constitution - where Michael Hayden of the NSA insists that the Fourth Amendment does NOT have a probable cause provision for searches and seizures? He insisted that if there was ONE part of the Constitution the NSA knows better than anyone else, it was the Fourth.

Yup.

From Brad Blog (guest blogged by David Edwards):

Prior to the Feb. 6th Senate Judiciary hearing on the NSA's Domestic Spying program, the Bush Administration is rushing to frame the debate. Most of the talk has amounted to little more than political spin.

Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Gen. Michael Hayden lead the PR blitz by taking questions from reporters at The National Press Club on Monday. The General confirmed to NSA expert James Bamford and Jonathan Landay with Knight Ridder that a feature of the NSA program was the lowering of the legal standard from 'probable cause' to 'reasonably believe' (a.k.a. 'reasonable suspicion') -- which would avoid the FISA Law requirements.

Besides showing that he had a limited understanding of the Fourth Amendment, Hayden's assertion of the Constitutionality of lowering the 'probable cause' standard has troubled many. This Kos diary calls the admission "explosive and damning"

Rick Santorum Exposed

OK, the idea of him exposed is a little creepy.

But Santorum Exposed also details Rick Santorum's complete hypocrisy (which does not begin to do justice to his arrogant behavior) on K Street corruption and other matters.

Corruption Digest

David Sirota - if you don't happen to catch him regularly - has been chronicling much of the lobbyist/kickback/sleezy deals in his Corruption Digest over at Working for Change's blog.

It's worth a read. The most recent installment is on Rick "Man on Dog and Republicans on Everything They Can" Santorum's efforts to distance himself from the K Street lobbying scandal, which is a hoot considering Rick regularly commutes on a Wal-Mart jet and used to regularly show up along with Tom DeLay at the K Street sleeze breakfast events.

Sorry about the Paucity of Posts

Work, a six-year-long Bush depression, hardware issues, and a bitch editor from hell have kept me elsewhere. But I'm sadly not joking about the depression.

That we're hearing Bush is doing better in polls right now as he shits on human rights and smirks his way through ripping up the US Constitution and Bill of Rights is honestly getting to me in a way that's hard to imagine. But as much as he bothers me, I'd like to kick some sense (since their anus is clearly the orifice from which they shat their brains a long time ago) into the Bush toadies and even the non toadies who are still clapping for the man.

I'd also like to propose that all these people get forcibly drafted into our war with Iran. You know, the one that won't be a crusade against Muslims even though it's the third Muslim country in a row we've gone in and tried to waste. But Iran isn't quite the country in decline that Iraq was after our sanctions really did wear down so much of the Iraqis. Iran's going to kick ass and it's going to be apparent even to the most fervent Bush apologistas that Bush is on a crusade to puff up his chest while he tries to wipe out every Muslim who isn't doing dirty oil business with his family. Oh, Bush doesn't really believe in all that religious crap. It's an act he bought as true. A few people mistook him for a God-scent King and he's eager to "raise" himself to their expectations.

Of course, it's easy to huff and puff when you aren't sacrificing your sons or daughters. And neither of Bush's kids, or his eight immediate nieces and nephews is doing anything but bar hopping, doing illegal drugs openly but don't face the sanctions you do (in fact, taxpayers pay for the Secret Service to cover up for them), and having rather profiglate sex, sometimes in public, while the Righteous Wrongies pretend that since the kids are in nice clothes, they aren't skanks and sleezes.

My time in advertising (brief) taught me one thing: don't buy the package. :)

Today's Bush Conference "Mechanic Flaw"?

Well, yes, the microphone hanging down was the problem.

But the egregious mechanical flaw, of course, is Bush himself.

He is driving me mad with all the smirking and strange huffing and puffing with all his speeches telling us it's his God given right to commit any atrocity he wants.

Abramoff Billed $25K to a Client for Lunch with the President

The White House's response?

"So?"

Actually, there was quite a testy exchange with White House press spokesweasel last week in which McClellan said it was not his job to tell the press what the White House did wrong, it was the press' job to learn what had been done wrong and then ask him questions about it. Novel idea since McClellan isn't paid by Bush and company but by the American taxpayers, true for most of Weaselton... er. Washington.

The Republican talking heads all say this isn't a GOP problem because Abramoff gave money across the board.

But that last part is hardly an accurate portrayal. One report says that for every dollar a Dem got from the ultra-wealthy lobbyist, GOPers got more than $1,000.

They also ignore the fact that under Tom DeLay, Dem lobbyists were pretty much forced to be fired. Any lobbying agency that had a Dem worker was told to hide them away because only GOP lobbyists were welcome. Tom also supposed had breakfast with K Street lobbying groups every week to give them a list of demands for what he and his people wanted. Under DeLay, he all but told staffers that if they expected to be paid, they needed to ask Jack or his cronies to write a check.

Third Apache Helicopter Down in Iraq in 10 Days

And the military always lies about this until it's learned that, of course, the folks with shoulder-mounted spitball shooters did indeed take down a multi million dollar helicopter and kill its entire crew.

Shit.

The Drumbeat Against Iran

The media seems to keep telling us that, regarding Condi Rice's latest saber rattling toward Iran, we don't have to worry about going in there because we don't have the troops to do so.

I find that rather cold comfort, and I doubt for a moment that lack of military preparedness will stop us if we decide to go after Iran. We had similar warnings before Afghanistan and Iraq and we're still there.

And handed out last week as an almost parenthetical statement, given no attention or emphasis, is a new projection that Iraq - the war we were told would more than pay for itself - will cost us at least 2-3 trillion.

TRILLION

Uh huh.

Imagine for a Minute...

That Pakistan or India or hell, even France, learned that a suspected terrorist was in downtown Chicago or Salt Lake City or Boston. They decided to launch an air strike to take out that terrorist.

But, hey, life isn't perfect so not only did they fail to kill the terrorist (who has had no trial and is not convicted of the crime - only "intelligence" tells us this person is at fault and that same intelligence has been wrong again and again and again and again and again), but they happen to kill 18-20 civilians including women and children instead.

Think, "oops!" would cut it?

Yet that is our way of handling al Zawahiri in Pakistan and the death of hundreds now Iraqis when trying to get al-Zarqawi. We do this repeatedly, and we simply don't understand why Iraqis and Pakistanis would fuss.

The War on Terror is creating far more terror than it is resolving. Not just in creating many new people angry and willing to join the martyr cause, but our actions are terrorizing innocent civilians. What the hell is going on and why are we allowing it?

Blogger's Identity Exposed by Lawsuit

Interesting - from Minneapolis Star Tribune:

A feisty anonymous Minnesota political blogger has unmasked himself in the face of a lawsuit that claims his blog defamed a local public relations firm.
The case against Michael Brodkorb and his website, www.minnesotademocratsexposed.com, could break new legal ground in the Wild West frontier of blogging.

Lawyers who filed the suit say that Web logs and other new media should be held to the same standards of accountability as traditional media and journalism. Brodbkorb, a former operative for the Minnesota Republican Party, pledges to protect his source and to keep his website going.

The suit alleges that Brodkorb, citing an unnamed source, defamed the St. Paul-based public relations firm New School Communications when he posted a claim that New School had become publicly critical of the congressional campaign of Coleen Rowley only after Rowley rejected a contract with the firm.

Despite being told that New School does not perform political campaign work, Brodkorb, the suit says, continues to make the claim, even though his source "may, in fact, be a fabrication."
Old time readers here know while I do not have anything against anonymous blogging, I think this is a case where the folks who feel he has wronged them do have a right to face their accuser, so to speak.

But it's a real gray area that becomes more of an issue when you're getting paid for the work. The "former Republican operative" part bothers me a little because it's hard to tell what it means. It also raises questions of whether like a Jeff Gannon, he's taking money to sell his opinion. Former means little; many of the bloggers, particularly on the right, do take very big money to blog nasties about anyone left of Attila the Hun. I do not see the trend anymore near as prevalent among moderates and left of center bloggers and blogs. But the rightie types also are far less likely to disclose the fact that they're being financed to spew.

The Alito Hearings

I'm going to blow a gasket, quite literally.

That Alito - a man who certainly must know how many Americans feel about Italian Americans or "wops" as I spent my childhood hearing - was part of a campaign to exclude women and minorities from Princeton and now pretends - like the Federalist Society - that he did not engage is beyond the pale. It tells you a LOT about how honest a man he is and how privileged he feels himself to be.

And he'll be confirmed because the only ones who can make it onto the Supreme Court under Bush are pieces of crap like Alito with no concern for the truth and no sense that he should be held accountable for his actions. Someone who cannot answer a single question without dancing about doesn't belong in any courtroom, let alone the Supreme Court.

And I'd pay money to see Mrs. Alito hit with a dead fish while she sits there smiling beneficently while her husband dodges questions knowing he'll take the right of choice from women at his first opportunity. After all, women like Mrs. Alito and her fashionable daughter always will have choice. They can go to a private doctor who will do a D&C and write it up as a diagnostic procedure rather than as an abortion. If you aren't well-heeled, that won't happen.

Bush on TV

He's coined a new word: "suicider".

What a jerk.

And the Iraqi police and military will take care of everything because it's their responsibility.. you know, one that Bush forced upon them.

Farris Hassan

What a 16-year-old piece of crap.

His family did well under Saddam before they came here, and did even better as part of the elite Florida rich and then he goes to Iraq on stocks and credit cards expecting the US military to protect him and then comes back to tell us about the glorious democracy he discovered in Iraq (even though he was there for 3 seconds and was a Bush supporter before he left and a bigger one after he came back). Oh, and we picked up a big part of the tab for protecting this little shit.

Why am I mad? He didn't discover democracy there. Listen to the story behind Hassan and you know he had help and went there with preconceived notions and returned to spew same, without any evidence that his notions were true.

He's quite the darling of the right wing in his pink Izod shirts and his declarations to help Governor Bush's campaigns and perhaps get the president elected to a third term. Hey, rich Bushies can overrule term limits, you know.

Poor Bill O'Lielly

My heart bleeds (ketchup):

NEW YORK (AP) — If Bill O'Reilly truly loves a good fight, then he's had quite a week. The Fox News Channel personality's confrontation with David Letterman Tuesday night made for some gripping television. The cranky Late Show host told his guest: "I have the feeling about 60% of what you say is crap."

O'Reilly called Olbermann a "notorious smear merchant" after the MSNBC host awarded him the "Worst Person in the World" prize for the 15th time.
By Jim Cooper, AP

That same night, nemesis Keith Olbermann on MSNBC once again named O'Reilly his "Worst Person in the World," this time for battling with two people at The New York Times. That's the 15th time O'Reilly has been cited since Olbermann began his half-facetious, half-serious nightly "award" to wag his finger at bad behavior.

For whatever reason, it seems more people are willing to step into the ring with the host of cable TV news' No. 1 program.

130 Dead in Iraq on Thursday

5 American soldiers and the rest mostly civilians.

Yet Mr. Bush is out pounding his chest today telling us how wonderfully the war is going and how the economy is picture perfect. Statistics, as any mathematician or journalist can tell you, can always be manipulated. The Bushies have made manipulation into an art form. Oh, they're not all that artful at it, but they just bully people into shutting up.

After all, a bad economy where even the middle class is struggling to pay health insurance and heating bills keeps people directed towards home rather than looking at the world around them and how badly it smells.

Lou Rawls Dead, Ariel Sharon Severely Brain Damaged

First, goodbye Lou. I did not have to be a direct fan of yours to enjoy your music when I did hear it. You will be missed.

As for Mr. Sharon, God help me, but Israel and the Palestinians would have been better if this man had never been allowed to return to power. He helped bring about the most recent wave of violence since his re-election, there have been numerous scandals associated with his administration, the Bushies' close relationship with him has hurt us all, and we make a huge mistake in congratulating Sharon for his efforts in the "peace" process.

Sharon pulled out of a few areas, but Israel still controls water, travel, lights, food, and employment for the Palestinians, who are still essentially occupied.

Settlement building went mad under Sharon, and for every area vacated (very few), illegal Israeli settlements have been built to surround the Palestinians, effectively boxing them in to control every aspect of their lives. This is NOT freedom. This is NOT peace. This is NOT giving the Palestinians a place. And as long as this occurs, Israel cannot hope for peace even as so many good Israelis surely deserve it.

Sharon was a man of peace as much as Bush is, meaning, not at all.

I am sorry to see any human condemned to permanent brain damage, but this is a man who harmed so many with no regard. Unfortunately, his replacement will be another Likkud nutcase.

Being Told to Pray

Again and again during the mine disaster, what did the media and our leaders tell us to do? Pray.

Wolfie Blitzer was practically screaming at us to pray during CNN's coverage, but others were, too. The president told us to pray.

Oh, I have no problems praying. I frequently do.

But I pay Bush and Company to do more than tell me to pray. I support CNN through viewership etc. I don't need these dunderheads to tell me what I should do. I want them to do their goddamned jobs, and none of that involves telling me to call on a higher power I only know through faith to produce a miracle that proper mine operation or other procedures would prevent from occuring in the first place.

Where is MSHA in the Upshur Mining Accident?

Granted, it's a bigger story in a way that the media got it so wrong about whether the majority of the miners were alive or dead.

But that's just the surface story.

Much more important is the fact that this story was largely managed and communicated solely by the owners and top level management of the mine, International Coal Group. Yet we pay taxes for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a federal group that is SUPPOSED to act as a watchdog.

Where was MSHA to tell us that this particular mine had more than 200 violations, almost all grave ones, in the last few years? Instead, the company people fielded questions and the only answer they really gave about the violations was, "Well, that was a different management."

No journalist who made it to TV ever said that ICG has continued those violations, or that new management is often a way to sugar coat prior problems. See, a new management team gets a few years' grace during which we seemingly can't blame them for past misdeeds. Many corporations have new management teams for problem units every few years, and I can't think it's just coincidence that this is the same length of time as the grace period we grant them.

As journalists and mining experts on Democracy Now this morning indicated, MSHA under Bush is a joke. MSHA is there to support the mine owners rather than employees going down into the mines. MSHA employees who try to whistle blow are marginalized or "downsized". Indeed, under Bush, MSHA has lost something like 1,700 positions. OK, if they can't do their jobs, I suppose we don't need so large an organization, but it's the people who DO monitor, who do demand changes, who get canned.

The Coal Miners

I haven't quite had the heart to write about this.

I had largely given up hope when I happened to see the excitement start up that 12 had been found alive. Stayed watching til the early hours of the morning with what seemed like incredible news... which turned out to be incredible indeed.

Then, like many of you, I awoke to the news that only one is alive and the rest was just a terrible, terrible mistake. Everybody seems to want to sue someone. As often as I heard the folks in the crowd say angrily - such people do not do well when given the microphone so frequently - that they intend to sue the networks for reporting what they themselves told the reporters.

But how many times have we heard about attempts to close down mines like that only to have these same people insist you just can't close the mines? People who vote for Bush and then are surprised that the Mine Safety group only works FOR the mine owners?

Oh, they have my sympathy. They do. But these folks want it both ways. And then they want to go shopping at Walmart and question why they - with their poor educations - can't get jobs except as miners.

Leader of Israel Suffers "Significant" Stroke

Wire services are reporting that Ariel Sharon has suffered a significant cerebral hemorrhage, is on respiratory assist, with paralysis below the waist.

I do not like Mr. Sharon but I wish the best for Israel, just as I wish the best for the Palestinians. Both need to be able to co-exist and live in that tiny area, and both perhaps have been badly served by some of their recent leadership.

Happy Bennett Day

Mr Judd/aka Andrew J Borden:

I cannot locate your email address since I last fucked up er.. enhanced my system.

So please forgive me if I post this private joke/memory from our day at Bennett College, now owned by the Moonies. This was the day I learned your mother had no concept of how to blend her makeup so that her face and neck were two wildly different colors, but only because YOU called everyone's attention to it.

Was that also the day we decided you were too disorganized to be gay? Your poor father.

Detroit, Autoworkers, and Health Insurance

The excellent Xavier and Peter at Pibbshow bring us this:

From the New York Times:
The reason comes down to simple self-interest. The United Auto Workers is one of the few private-sector unions that doesn't run its own health plan. Rather, most have created huge companies to administer their workers' plans, giving them a large and often corrupt stake in the current system...Despite shrinking membership, organized labor still has enough money and muscle to get behind a campaign for national health insurance. Last month, public-sector unions in California came up with tens of millions of dollars in a successful campaign to defeat a ballot measure that challenged their right to use union dues for political purposes. The problem is getting American unions to fight for common concerns as opposed to narrow institutional interests. It may just be that a broad-scale union overhaul will have to precede one in American health care.
Now you see why American cars cost so much.

Letterman Wiping the Floor with Bill O'Reilly

O'Reilly is trying to tell David Letterman that there really is a war on Christmas and Letterman, no kidding, is calling him a liar to his face. I love it. Loved it even more when the audience clapped loudly.

Letterman also told O'Reilly HE should be careful calling Cindy Sheehan a terrible person and when O'Reilly insisted Sheehan was run by "far left extremists", Letterman said, "Gee, did you lose anyone in the war? If not, you have really NO right to speak for them or call Mrs. Sheehan wrong."

Then he hit O'Reilly with "Why are we in Iraq in the first place?"

The audience is loving this. Me, too.

Top 10 News Stories of 2006?

Washington Post already has some - part tongue in cheek - predictions up for what will become the biggest news stories of this year. More than a few are worth noting, including how the Condi who wants to be president suddenly is spending more time having her picture taken in the deep South than in other countries (her job does not usually include diplomacy in Alabama).

But these are the ones I noted specifically:

(1) George W. Bush will continue his bid to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most Frequent Use of the Blame-the-Messenger Strategy (Modern Era)." We saw the latest example Friday when the administration reacted to disclosure of its vast domestic surveillance program by launching a Justice Department investigation -- not to reexamine the electronic spying itself, which seems to violate the law, but to identify the whistle-blower who brought this practice to light. Next target: Who's leaking all that unhelpful news from Iraq, such as figures on American casualties and reports of torture by U.S.-trained Iraqi police?

(2) The administration will see steady "progress" in Iraq, even if the new government's first act is to sign a friendship pact with Iran. This "progress" will allow some U.S. troops to be brought home in the summer and fall. Unfortunately, they will have to be sent right back to Iraq in mid-November, after the midterm election. But who could have foreseen that?

---
(8) Fox News Channel, having had such success inventing and then covering last month's imaginary "war on Christmas," will go on to concoct imaginary "wars" against other holidays. A "war on Easter" would be too obvious and a "war on Independence Day" too easy, so here's a challenge to my talented friends at Fox: Come up with a "war on Labor Day." It sounds tough, since organized labor isn't a natural Fox constituency, but maybe there's a way to work in the illegal immigration issue, or examine how the practice of outsourcing jobs robs Americans of employment opportunities.

---
(10) Americans will suddenly wake up and question the Bush administration about Iraq, about domestic spying, about global warming, about tax cuts. But just then, as the president fumbles for answers, a compelling news event will steal away the nation's attention.

Hard to believe, but another attractive young white woman will vanish.

Wanted (By Some, Anyway)

Shamefully (I do guilt well) lifted from Open Your Mind's Eye, a poster that is all too apt - but nonetheless a crying shame, something we should hate ourselves for engaging in - in today's climate.

Abramoff

Wow. Could he have looked anymore like an evil G-man or a character from a movie today as he appeared in the fancy black trenchcoat and the hat?

And immediately, the GOP choir came out to insist that DeLay did nothing wrong and that it will be only Democrats who go down because of this scandal. A few even had the chutzpah to suggest that DeLay had been unwillingly forced to accept the $148K all-star golfing extravanganza in England or Scotland as well as all the other pricy benefits he took from the lobbyist.

How exactly does one force a Congressman to take a $148K golf trip? Does the lobbyist also force the Bugman to get the hair plugs and the hair dye and the Botox injections and the expensive clothes and stuff? Did he force DeLay to go from an exterminator turning a bit of profit into a multimillionaire all during his tenure in the (Whore)house of Reprehensibles?

It boggles the mind!

"US Says End is in Sight for Iraq Rebuilding"

Uh huh. And I'm still planning to be 5'8 and flat chested when I grow up.

But let me point out this little bit of news missing from the Washington Post piece on which the above headline is taken:

1) Iraq did not need rebuilding until... oops... we shocked and awed them because - another big oops! - we said they had WMD and were just about to land a mushroom cloud over the US and .... gosh.. it turns out that their weapon program amounted to Saddam's rather reckless abandon when shooting off his rifles.

2) Not only did we cause some damage in Iraq, and not only have we blasted the place all to hell, BUT we've left depleted uranium EVERYWHERE.

3) One has to wonder if one of the reasons we chose to do so very much damage is because we knew Halliburton (Dick Cheney's little company), Bechtel (which gave us Rummy), and others were going to get very, very, very lucrative contracts to rebuild even if we've learned that they're basically just taken the money and not delivering.

Enron, George Bush, and Uzbekistan

Brought to us by the fine folks at Left Edge North, this is very much worth a read:

Read this, pass it along....thanks.
Via Europhobia, here's a note from Britain's former Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Craig Murray.

Spread it around, please. Liberally.

More old newsFrom the chatter on the web, it's clear that there are still a few diehard Bush/Blair supporters out there who believe this is about democracy and security.

I hate to disillusion such people, but everyone should be aware of this document: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/bushlay12.html(This was released with other Enron court documents. To anyone covering the Enron story, it meant very little. Now, however....)

This is about corporate power and governments who do their bidding. It's about the subjugation of democracy.

"Bolton Plans to Restructure the U.N."

That's the headline of this Washington Post piece.

I just see oh... maybe a couple of little problems:

1) John Bolton is NOT the leader of the U.N. God help us all if he were.

2) John wasn't liked going in, but no less than Britain has complained of how badly he's behaving in the job. They want him out.

3) Considering that the rest of the world would rather have a very bad case of clap than have the U.S. thrusting itself any harder down their throats right now would just seem like a poor time for Bolton to decide unilaterally that the rest of the world has to bend to the will of a nasty little Bushie bureaucrat.

And these problems don't even begin to address the very real problems - diplomacy, cooperation, efficacy and much, much more - afoot here.

To Futz or Not to Futz...

Yes, I'm still futzing. I don't like this template and the 57 ones I created myself all have various deficiencies.

So expect to see different templates tried (I'm pretty trying myself, btw) and I continue to exercise my "God given right" to futz.

Say Hello to

We Don't Agree, But...

A Note to Mr. Bush: Be Careful What You Wish For

We might just get you in prison where you belong.

Interesting Time Mag piece, which starts like this:

Up until a couple of weeks ago, George W. Bush's script to put the misery of 2005 behind him had seemed destined for a smooth rollout. Buoyed by the apparent success of the Iraqi elections, the President would score a quick confirmation victory with Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, follow it up with a soaring State of the Union address and then return to full campaign mode with a sweep around the country, talking about big issues like immigration and Medicare and throwing the spotlight on a resurgent economy. But the revelation that his Administration has been spying in this country without warrants--illegally, critics say--may have put a crimp in Bush's plan to climb back on top of the agenda as the new legislative session begins. "When Congress comes back," warns a top G.O.P. congressional aide, "domestic surveillance and privacy issues will be all over the front pages."

To which the President and his strategists seem to be saying, Bring it on. From practically the moment news of the domestic-surveillance program hit the front page of the New York Times, the White House decided its strategy would be to "overwhelm the skeptics, not back off, not change anything about the program and really home in very strongly on the fact that this is a legitimate part of presidential warmaking power," says an adviser. Bush launched a ferocious defense in his Dec. 17 weekly radio address, inviting in a network camera to capture the rare live delivery of the speech as he declared that the no-longer-secret surveillance program makes it "more likely that killers like these 9/11 hijackers will be identified and located in time." G.O.P. strategists argue that Democrats have little leeway to attack on the issue because it could make them look weak on national security and because some of their leaders were briefed about the the National Security Agency (NSA) no-warrant surveillance before it became public knowledge. Some key Democrats even defend it. Says California's Jane Harman, ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee: "I believe the program is essential to U.S. national security and that its disclosure has damaged critical intelligence capabilities."

But the NSA operation--and particularly Bush's decision to bypass the generally amenable Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for authorization--has drawn fire not only from liberal Democrats but also from some of the most conservative in Bush's party, in which government restraint is a fundamental precept. "There is a test of Republicans on this," says activist Grover Norquist, normally a White House ally. "The country will let you get away with this in the wake of 9/11, but that doesn't make it right." And even if Republicans are prepared to bless Bush's program, they know it theoretically would have to mean extending such sweeping Executive power to, say, a President Hillary Clinton.

Oh Really?

Posted by John at AmericaBlog:

Well, isn't this growing curiouser and curiouser. Now Bush is saying that some of the calls he's illegally tapping are being made FROM the US and that the people making them are Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda affiliates.
Bush stressed that the surveillance involved telephone calls from "a few numbers" outside the United States by people associated with al-Qaida, the terrorist organization that plotted the Sept. 11 attacks.

The White House later clarified Bush's remarks, saying he meant to say calls going to and originating from the U.S. were being monitored."

It seems logical to me that if we know there's a phone number associated with al-Qaida or an al-Qaida affiliate and they're making phone calls, it makes sense to find out why," he said.
Really? So now there are Al Qaeda members and Al Qaeda affiliates inside the United States making phone calls, we know who they are, and:

1) Bush is letting known terrorists and known terrorist affiliates roam around our country free, which begs the question: Why aren't they under arrest?

2) Bush is saying that the courts would never grant a warrant to listen to the phone calls of Al Qaeda members or Al Qaeda affiliates inside the United States. That's just a lie.

DeLay Not Alone in Generous Taking from Lobbyist Abramoff?

Posted by Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo:

AP: "Federal prosecutors and lawyers for Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff are putting the finishing touches on a plea deal that could be announced as early as Tuesday, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The plea agreement would secure the lobbyist's testimony against several members of Congress who received favors from him or his clients."

Depleted Uranium, That Other White Meat

Daily Read at Trailing Edge Blog points us to a good article on depleted uranium, the stuff we've been freeing all over Iraq like it's confetti and we have cause for celebration. ::sigh:: It isn't as safe as confetti and we hardly have cause to be happy.

The Dangers of the Disappearing Middle Class

Cali Dem at Nite Swimming shares this Paul Krugman quote that I think says a LOT about our current situation:

"Since 1980 in particular, US government policies have consistently favored the wealthy at the expense of working families - and under the current administration, that favoritism has become extreme and relentless. From tax cuts that favor the rich to bankruptcy "reform" that punishes the unlucky, almost every domestic policy seems intended to accelerate our march back to the robber baron era. ... But the real reasons to worry about the explosion of inequality since the 1970's have nothing to do with envy. The fact is that working families aren't sharing in the economy's growth, and face growing economic insecurity. And there's good reason to believe that a society in which most people can reasonably be considered middle class is a better society - and more likely to be a functioning democracy - than one in which there are great extremes of wealth and poverty."

More Windows Vulnerabilities Noted

[Update: Miss M kindly shares these links and additional information about this not so lovely vulnerability: The same fix, two places to find it, and pleas to install the "unofficial fix" it could be a week till MS comes up with one (can you say "Patch Tuesday") Internet Storm Center - Cooperative Cyber http://isc.sans.org/diary.php or Security Now! Notes for Episode #20 http://grc.com/sn/notes-020.htm - thank you, MissM!]

From the Chicago Trib, and these aren't limited to Internet Explorer this time:

Users can infect their computers by visiting certain Web sites that are able to exploit some Windows-based applications, Internet security company Panda Software said Friday. It called the discovery "one of the most serious vulnerabilities recently detected."

The flaw to the world's most popular software leaves PCs open to adware and spyware as well as Trojans that can hide damaging programs. Internet Explorer, Outlook and the Windows Picture and Fax viewer are used to insert the potentially harmful code, said Patrick Hinojosa, chief technology officer of Panda."

Because this exploits particular programs on Windows, rather than Windows itself, your machine can get infected simply by visiting a Web site that's set up to exploit the flaw," he said.
If this behaves anything like the worm I was attacked with at Thanksgiving, God help us. That was the worst mess I'd ever seen, and I've done this kind of work professionally for a very long time without coming across anything that wreaked that much havoc.

Boston Globe Doesn't Like Bush's "Drug Plan" Either

No wonder less than 10% of Americans have signed up for it. It's a case where not understanding may save you, since you have to go HMO rather than stay in regular Medicare to get coverage.

Here:

For starters, coverage is woefully inadequate. You pay a $250 deductible and then a 25 percent copay on the first $2,250 of drug benefits each year, plus roughly another $450 a year in premiums. So if your prescriptions cost $2,250 a year, or about $190 a month, you pay $1,200 a year all told and the plan pays just $1,050.

That's pretty shabby. But then, the truly bizarre feature of the plan kicks in. Coverage simply disappears for the next $2,850 in drug expenses and only picks up again when you have incurred a total of $5,100 in prescription costs. This is the infamous ''hole in the doughnut."

A great many seniors will never get the coverage because the plan is a bad bargain, and they just won't sign up. Of if they do sign up, they will run out of the ability to pay enough out of pocket before qualifying for needed benefits. Even with these disgracefully skimpy benefits, the plan is expected to add over half a trillion dollars to the federal budget over the next decade.
Why would anyone have designed such an insane program?

Because the political purpose was never to deliver good benefits. One administration goal, running the program through the private insurance industry, conflicted with the imperative of a clear, cost-effective plan. Seniors must evaluate innumerable competing private plans, each with subtle differences in costs and benefits that make an impenetrable program even less fathomable, and raise total costs because each of these private plans tacks on a profit. This was a case of privatizing something done far more efficiently through a direct government program.

Damn Them

Really, damn them right to hell.

Not even Satan would want to take in the Bushies. No class, all brass.

A Little Close to Home

Just found this report in the Times Argus from the AssPress. While the exact anti-war marches are not referenced, I believe I participated in most of the major ones held by this group, which means I was monitored, too.

Here:

COLCHESTER — Sen. Patrick Leahy wants the Defense Department to give him the details about two Vermont anti-war protests that were monitored by government officials.

Leahy, a Democrat, said Vermont had a long tradition of peaceful political protest.

"I want to know the extent of it. I want to know under what conceivable, conceivable legal justification they are doing it," Leahy told Vermont Public Radio.

"And even if they could legally justify it, what dunderhead policy reason (is there) for doing it," he said. "And again, I'd like to know how much it cost. The Department of Defense says we don't have enough money to get the kind of armor and protection our troops need in Iraq, but we've got money to go around and spy on Quaker meetings?"Pentagon policy allows it to take the legal steps necessary to protect military installations and personnel from violence.

Earlier this month, NBC News reported that the Pentagon has monitored anti-war protests as part of a stepped up intelligence collection effort. The efforts included monitoring two Vermont protests.

Joseph Gainza of the American Friends Service Committee, who helped organize those protests, said he was not surprised that the Pentagon keeps tabs on the peace movement."What disturbed me was that it's part of a larger pattern that this government seems to be doing what it pleases and hiding from the American people so much of its violations of law," Gainza said.

Leahy wrote Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld asking for more information."Besides, I told the Department of Defense, if they really want to hear Vermonters speak out against the war, they don't have to send a camera crew to snoop around Vermont, just turn on C-SPAN," Leahy said. "I do it on the Senate floor all the time."

Gainza said the Pentagon's monitoring of protests could have a chilling effect on the public's right to challenge the government."People don't want to have their names on files somewhere as doing something which the government doesn't approve of. People are very concerned about that," Gainza said.
Anyone who has ever met Joe Gainza could not imagine that he would be perceived as a threat to the DoD or anyone else. He is an intelligent man who strives - as many of us do - for non-violent solutions.

But if they think they will deter people like me from showing up at these, well, they're sorely mistaken. They can and have hurt me in various ways for speaking up and out, but I really don't have much more to lose.

One thing I REFUSE to lose is my freedom of speech, my freedom to assemble peaceably with my neighbors, and to try to affect change in a government that I feel in no way represents the ideals or even the Constitution of this country.

Basta!

See previous posting for what this means. Hrrm.

Yes...

I'm screwing around.

We'll see how messed up I leave things when I finally scream "Basta!" and go clean the bathroom or figure out under what dung pile my career has curled up to die or something.

Paul Krugman's Look at 2005

Speaking of ToppleBush, they're often a great source for op/ed pieces kept from us by the Times' assinine subscription wall, like this from Paul Krugman:

A year ago, everyone expected President Bush to get his way on Social Security. Pundits warned Democrats that they were making a big political mistake by opposing plans to divert payroll taxes into private accounts.

A year ago, everyone thought Congress would make Mr. Bush's tax cuts permanent, in spite of projections showing that doing so would lead to budget deficits as far as the eye can see. But Congress hasn't acted, and most of the cuts are still scheduled to expire by the end of 2010.

A year ago, Mr. Bush made many Americans feel safe, because they believed that he would be decisive and effective in an emergency. But Mr. Bush was apparently oblivious to the first major domestic emergency since 9/11. According to Newsweek, aides to Mr. Bush finally decided, days after Hurricane Katrina struck, that they had to show him a DVD of TV newscasts to get him to appreciate the seriousness of the situation.

A year ago, before "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" became a national punch line, the rising tide of cronyism in government agencies and the rapid replacement of competent professionals with unqualified political appointees attracted hardly any national attention.
A year ago, hardly anyone outside Washington had heard of Jack Abramoff, and Tom DeLay's position as House majority leader seemed unassailable.

NSA Freely Shared "Secret" Wiretap Data with Other US Agencies

Lovely. Just peachy keen.

Alito's Judicial Record Defies Stereotyping? Oh Really?

WaPo makes the assertion that potential (let's face it, a foregone conclusion he'll be shoved down our throats) Supreme Sam Alito's judicial record defies stereotyping. But I don't think that's true at all.

His record keeps getting massaged, sure, but any good look shows he's happy to hand off civil liberties for the White House and NSA to trash, and wants Roe vs Wade undone. How is that against stereotype?

The White House won't allow a judge to go up to the Supremes who would fight for civil liberties or for checks and balances on unbridled power by the prez and VP. In other words, the Supreme the Bushies want cannot be a Supreme concerned with the people of the US, just in concentrating power in a few hands with no recourse for the people.

WaPo: DeLay-Abramoff Money Trail

The Washington Post draws you a map of sorts.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure the public gets it. Oh yes, there is corruption on both sides of the aisle. I would never pretend to state otherwise. But the size, scope, and even the sentiment behind the corruption on the part of key Republicans like DeLay, like Dr HMO, Bill "Here Kitty, Kitty... I want to dissect you!" Frist" and even James Senselessbrenner... er... Sensenbrenner is on a scale so much larger and more dangerous to our society than what we see elsewhere that everything else pales by comparison.

Yes, I'd like to see corruption everywhere abolished. But first, we have to understand the problem. DeLay has corrupted politics in a way that is so much worse than it ever was before. Frist corrupted it again by making Capitol Hill a rubberstamp for this White House - and at the point we have a rubber stamp, we could save a fortune by simply firing all of Congress.

Israeli Paper Reports US Prepping NATO for Possible Attack on Iran

Holy fuck, Batman.

From Haaretz:

German media sources have recently reported that the Bush Administration is preparing its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies for a potential attack on nuclear sites in Iran.

The "Der Spiegel" weekly emphasized that "Washington is now sending high level officials to prepare allies for a potential strike, as opposed to conducting talks that just hint at the possibility, which is what has been happening until now."

The Berlin paper "Tagesspiegel" quoted NATO intelligence sources last week who said that "NATO members have received information that the United States is currently looking into all possibilities, including a military attack against the regime in Tehran."
In how many languages can you say the word "crap"?

Just Another Day in Paradise

Violence was particularly high in Iraq on the final day of 2005, with notations that it was at least as violent as 2004.

So where's the great improvement? You know, the one we always hear about when the Bushies complain the media never tells us about all the nice stories in Iraq (while CNN shows about 10 hours per day of footage of Baby Noor, the child with spina bifida that they came across while they were sacking the family's home looking for insurgents because what you do in a free democracy is have combat troops enter homes by force).

Happy 2006!

Rats - Anderson Cooper is not spending most of his Times Square coverage with drag queens, although Ed Lavendera was down talking with a few. OK, OK. It's not that I have a particular affinity - or distaste, for that matter - towards drag queens, but it's just nice to know CNN can (albeit unintentionally) really piss off the right wing nut quotient with its Ring in the New Year broadcast. Last year, most of 2 or 3 hours was spent with some of the most outrageous and colorful drag queens since J Edgar Hoover last put on a deep violet organza party dress and demanded everyone call him, "Madame Mary".

Anyway, the best to each and everyone of you in 2006. May we finally make progress instead of doing so much wheel spinning, hand wringing, and watching and listening to everyone in the media tell us Bush is such a man.
