Hip Hop: Bush Brought Down the Towers

Lying awake unable to sleep and listening to the local community run, all volunteer radio station overnight, I happened to hit one of the hip hop shows (strangely played by the same guy who earlier in the night had been playing James Taylor, Johnny Cash and perhaps Keith Urban).

As you might guess, as a white woman beyond her teens and early 20s, I don't get a huge amount of exposure to hip hop. Hell, I don't get a huge amount of exposure to any music since I'm not an audiophile.

But I noticed last night as I've heard before that some hip hop is blatantly political, going well beyond the immediate "the bitch done me wrong after she gave me a blowjob". Notably, last night - as on other occasions - I heard variations on a theme: "Bush brought down the towers."

As long-time visitors probably realize, I've slowly evolved to question 9-11 in ways in which I was very reticent to do initially. While I never bought the government line about how it happened, I strongly resisted any belief that the Bush Administration and what passes for a power structure here were directly and irrevocably complicit in 9-11.

Today, I'm not certain what I believe except that for 9-11 to happen, for ALL the failures (hundreds of them) to occur on that day required assistance at the topmost levels (and we know some of that assistance came from airlines, from corporations based on what we know of whom the government called upon to act behind the scenes on that day and those that followed), and as I've watched the Bushies again and again seem to play into EXACTLY what bin Laden and company would WANT to have happen, I tend to think there probably is some orchestrated choreography between "US" and "THEM".

So I was interested to hear that some faction of hip hop believes that Bush did indeed bring down the towers. I wonder how prevalent that view has become, although it's not voiced anywhere with the frequency or volume that an Ann Coulter, a Bill O'Reilly, a Rush Limbaugh voice their hate-filled view of what the "left" conspires to do.

I suspect we'll never be treated to the truth and even if we were, a huge percentage of the population would choose not to believe it as too horrific. But I also wonder how many people today already suspect some elements of it, as evidenced by the music last night.
