And that reason for Castro's staying power in Cuba boils down to just two little words: United States.
If the exiled Cubans who escaped to the U.S. in the late 50s hadn't made as their life's passion the unseating of Fidel Castro, and if the U.S. hadn't allowed these exiles to dominant our policies toward Cuba, Castro would have been out of there at least 25 years ago.
At this point, I would hate to see Cuba pass into the hands of the U.S. if Bush is in power when Castro leaves or dies. I think this would just exchange for Cubans one evil dictator for another. See the next post (the one above this, for more on Cuba and U.S. policy toward it).
